What You Need To Know Before Choosing a Sunless Tanner
 We have all heard of just how damaging and risky using a tanning bed can be. With cancer on the rise, many are choosing to skip the tanning beds and seek out safer alternatives, such as using a sunless tanning product to help give their skin that golden glow when they cannot spend endless hours lounging in the sun.
If you have visited a department or beauty store recently, you have undoubtedly noticed that there are a lot of sunless tanning products out there that all have different price points. So which one is for you?
Go for the Large Selection
Start your hunt by visiting a store that you know has a lot to choose from. Drug stores are a great place to start, especially the larger chains, as they will carry almost all major brands of sunless tanners.
Alternatively, you can shop for sunless tanning products online. This way, you can easily compare prices with a quick click of the mouse and read different reviews from people who have used the product. You will quickly find out which tanner is too streaky, too orange, or which one just plain does not work at all.
Smell the Tanner
This may sound weird, but it’s true. A lot of sunless tanners absolutely STINK and so a night out with the ladies may be ruined by your stinky tanning product that you applied hours prior to leaving your home. Some tanning products have a very strong, almost medicinal smell that isn’t very appealing, but others have a more fragrant and pleasant smell that will make you feel sexy and beautiful.
FDA Approval
Any sunless tanning product that you pick up should be FDA approved. The key product that you want to ensure is in your tanner is DHA. DHA, also known as dihydroxyacetone, is the only ingredient that is in sunless tanning products that has been approved by the FDA for regular use.
Buy Small
Before you really commit to a sunless tanner, no matter what people have told you or what reviews you have read have said, buy the smallest amount of product possible. You never know how the sunless tanner will react with your skin type and skin tone, so save your cash and try only a small amount at a time before you commit to a particular type and brand.
Test it
Before you decide to rub in a ton of sunless tanner all over your body, use a test spot first. The test spot should be an area on our body that represents the skin tone and color that is primarily present every where else on your body, but isn’t visible to anyone else. Using a small patch on the stomach, the hip, or the upper thigh is a great place to start, or you can try applying it to the underside of your wrist. Follow the directions on the package when you apply. If you’re happy with the color, great! If not, be thankful that you saved yourself a whole lot of trouble trying to remove it.
