Shanti (Nutan) is married to Kewal (Rehman) in Lahore on the eve of the
Independence Day. Shanti's husband and family migrate to Delhi, leaving her
behind. She seeks refuge in the house of an Afghan bandit Abdul Rehman (Pran).
Shanti bears a son, Anwar (Moppet Raja), and goes back to India. Her husband and
family disown her. She finds shelter in criminal, Chhalia (1960)'s (Raj Kapoor) house.
He falls in love with her. Abdul Rehman comes to Delhi to settle an old feud
with Chhalia (1960) and threatens to kidnap Shanti. They resolve the problem and Rehman
goes back. Chhalia (1960) helps Shanti and Kewal, to reconcile giving up his love.
