It was T-Series which showed the way, way back in 1986, when they announced a
Jaya Prada-Jeetendra film with music by Gulshan Kumar’s then-favourites
Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and Surendera Mohan as director. The film never took off,
and later Gulshan Kumar decided to make a romantic album with Anand-Milind in
the late 80s, whose songs so impressed him that he got scripts tailored around
them. The result was the video film Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka (1988) (1989) which did
terrific business, so much so that Gulshan Kumar decided to make a sequel a year
later, with the unused songs of that album.
