Radha (Usha Kiron) is a poor girl struggling to make a living for herself and
her ailing father. A young man, Nirmal (Dev Anand) helps her to find a good job
and the two of them are beginning to fall in love, when disaster strikes.
Radha’s evil landlord takes advantage of her inability to pay the rent – she
pleads for more time and the man lures her to his house and molests her. She is
shattered and on the verge of suicide when another man, Mastram (Agha) saves her
and takes her home where she has a baby. When she tries to get back to her old
job, she’s refused a place and asks to see the manager. To her horror, this is
none other than Nirmal. This black and white classic has probably the most
memorable ever soundtrack from Shankar – Jaikishen. Shailendra’s lyrics sparkle
in their settings – every one of the songs is a little gem. The Hemant Kumar –
Lata Mangeshkar duet ‘Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahaan Ho Tum’ is still one of the most
romantic numbers ever picturised. Dev Anand is at his whimsical best, Usha Kiron
is ethereal in the moonlight. This is romance at its best.
