Upendranath Choudhury (Tarun Bose) and his wife Charu (Sulochana) have a
daughter, Rama (Shashikala) and they adopt Sujata (Nutan), the Harijan orphan.
Choudhury arranges the marriage of a family friend's (Lalitha Pawar) son, Adhir
(Sunil Dutt) to marry Rama, but he appreciates and loves Sujata. Charu, enraged
by the jeopardy of her own daughter's marriage, lashes out at the innocent
Sujata and reveals her background. Events move to a surprising climax.
