Suroor

Mag4you.com talks to Suroor about coming back with a new album, collaborating with other musicians and everything else in between

Mag4you.com: Why did you take such a long break for your new album?
Kami: After Pyar Tou Hona Hee Hai, I moved to Dubai but kept working on the album. This time we decided to work with different music producers unlike our first album which was produced by one producer, Faizi. So, it took a while finishing the whole album plus my living in Dubai and Ali bhai's in Karachi also slowed down our pace of working. The situation in Pakistan was also not very ideal for an album launch so all these factors contributed in this delay.

Mag4you.com: Is Suroor intact? Where is Faizi?
Kami: Suroor is very much intact. Faizi was never a part of Suroor but he was the producer of our first album, Pyar Tou Hona Hee Hai and was paid for it. All we did was ask him to be a part of all the videos from the first album which he produced because we thought that the music producer should be known to people as he has a lot of input in the album. In Pakistan people ask producers to produce their albums but don't give them due credit whereas Suroor made sure Faizi was featured in all our videos from the first album.

Mag4you.com: Tell us about your new album.
M Ali: We are always coming up with different experiments. Pyar Tou Hona Hee Hai was an experiment where we collaborated with Ali Haider and Najam Sheraz. This time our new album has a track with Wiam, an international Arabic artist. As I also mentioned above, this album has been produced by different music producers including guitars maestro Amir Zaki, Qasim Azhar, Nabeel Chisty, Faizi, Farrukh Shaikh and Atif Ali.

Mag4you.com: What is Suroor's target audience?
Kami: Well, our target audience is anyone and everyone who likes good, soothing music. We have school going fans as well as mature listeners. I believe that the best thing about Suroor's music is that it's not limited to any age group. We have performed in front of packed college crowds as well as in front of city elite.

Mag4you.com: What is your take on the present music scene?
M. Ali: It is very bad. Unless our government takes serious measures, our music industry will be wiped out. We all our depending on Bollywood for survival and if that avenue closes, survival will be impossible.

Mag4you.com: What is your take on piracy?
M Ali: That's the other thing which is killing Pakistani music. On one hand there are no concerts in the country and on the other hand, album sales are down due to piracy and internet downloading.

Mag4you.com: How important are social media tools in this age of Internet?
Kami: It is extremely important. That's one medium an artist can't ignore.

Mag4you.com: How was it recording with Amir Zaki?
Kami: Amir bhai is just too good, a great artist and a great human being. I would say it was an honour for me to work with such a great guitar guru of Pakistan.

Mag4you.com: You teamed up with Wiam, an Arabic artiste. How was the experience?
Kami: It was a great experience working with a foreign artist. Though I would say that working with Ajay Devgan and Ayesha Takia was still the best experience so far but working with Wiam was very interesting. We stayed together for a long time during the video shoot and audio production.

Mag4you.com: How important are music videos?
Kami: Music videos are the most important tool to reach the masses. Once you are seen, you are known and recent surveys tell us that only those songs of an album make waves which are supported by a video. We have made four videos so far from the new album Sajna Vey.

Mag4you.com: What's next on your agenda?
M Ali: A few plans include a video release of 'Sajna Ve' (remixed), another video release of 'Sajna Ve' (unplugged) and a video release of 'Aaj Phir Aazma Lain'. Plus we will be touring USA and Canada for a series of shows in January 2012.
